Small Press Traffic kicked off its 50th anniversary year on Janaury 27, 2024 with an evening of dancing, poetry, and prizes. Curated by Noah Ross, Jocelyn Saidenberg, and Robin Tremblay-McGaw, the event features nine poets who served various roles in Small Press Traffic’s development as former directors, organizers, readers, and participants — Norma Cole, Tonya Foster, Samantha Giles, Robert Glück, Owen Hill, Dana Teen Lomax, Camille Roy, Juliana Spahr, and Elizabeth Treadwell (Thomas Dunn reading for Treadwell) — who each selected a poem of their choice by another poet. Ross, Saidenberg, and Tremblay-McGaw also curated a visual timeline of book covers from SPT's print collection, which was displayed on the gallery walls. Syd Staiti opened the program with some remarks. The celebration took place at Et al.'s Mission location in San Francisco with tunes by a DJ Ori Diwata, delicious food from Reem’s, and poetry games. Special 50th anniversary merch with work of Bay Area artists Cliff Hengst, Aki Neumann, Floss Editions, and Paul Ebenkamp was available for sale, as well as a beautiful poster of our bygone 24th Street bookstore drawn in 1980 by Ed Aulerich-Sugai, the famed subject of Robert Glück’s About Ed.
