We recommend working with a bootfitter one-on-one. But if you can't, or you just want to learn what they know, here's a start! When our bootfitters meet with skiers, they are first working to get the right fit. That includes length/size (mondopoint, measured in centimeters), width/last (measured in millimeters), in-step height, and a slew of other considerations, including someone's ski style. After that, we want to get the right flex. Flex ratings from brands are arbitrary measurements from brands of how stiff a boot is. Higher flexes for bigger and/or more aggressive skiers, lower flexes for smaller and/or less aggressive skiers. We also want to get the right type of boot. The most common are alpine boots, specifically designed for classic resort skiing. Alpine touring boots use flexible cuffs and rubber soles to optimize the backcountry skiing experience. Hybrid and freetour ski boots combine the best of both: They can tour uphill while also providing a strong downhill performance, much like alpine boots. Beyond all that: BOA and custom insoles provide more options for customization, giving skiers even more ways to dial in their fit.
