(6 Sep 1995) English/Nat OJ Simpson prosecutors have been hit with a vicious assault on one of their top witnesses as the Simpson case inches toward a close Wednesday. The defence has done its best to portray Detective Mark Fuhrman as a lying racist who planted key murder evidence against their client. The O-J Simpson defence has proved this week that the Los Angeles police detective who says he found a bloody glove and blood stains lied on the witness stand in March when he told jurors he hadn't used a racist slur in the last 10 years. Laura Hart-McKinny contradicted Fuhrman's sworn testimony that he hadn't used the word "nigger" in the last decade. Hart-McKinny, a writer from North Carolina, interviewed the former detective between 1985 until 1994. SOUNDBITE: "And it is a fact isn't it that Detective Mark Fuhrman used these epithets in 1985 isn't it?" McKinny: "Yes." Darden: "And in 1988 correct?" McKinny: "Yes." SUPERCAPTION: Chris Darden, Prosecutor Laura Hart-McKinny, Witness. On Tuesday, the jurors heard for the first time Fuhrman's voice uttering the word "nigger" on a tape. SOUNDBITE: "They don't do anything. They don't go out and initiate contact with some 5 foot 6 nigger who's been in prison the last seven years pumping weights." Cochran: "Do you recognise the voice of the person who is saying `they don't do anything. They don't go out and initiate contact with some 6 foot five inch nigger that has been in prison pumping weights-who said that?" McKinny: "Officer Mark Fuhrman." SUPERCAPTION: Mark Fuhrman, Detective Johnnie Cochran, Lawyer Laura Hart-McKinny, Witness. Sparks flew when Prosecutor Christopher Darden eluded to police "cover-ups" in his cross-examination of McKinny Lead defence consul Johnnie Cochran jumped on the chance to suggest to jurors that the Los Angeles Police Department was laced with "cover-ups." SOUNDBITE: "Who was expressing these words of cover-ups?" McKinny: "Detective Mark Fuhrman." Cochran: "And with regard to this cover-up he talked to you did he not about....." Ito: "Sustained Sustained." SUPERCAPTION: Johnnie Cochran, Defence Lawyer Laura Hart-McKinny, Witness Judge Lance Ito. Ito abruptly sustained Cochran's comments and quickly called lawyers into his chambers for a private meeting. Once testimony resumed McKinny spoke again about Fuhrman's racist venom. SOUNDBITE: "Is there any doubt in your mind that Fuhrman used this horrible word 41 or more times during the times you were talking with him any doubt in your mind at all?" McKinny : "No" SUEPRCAPTION: Johnnie Cochran, Defence Lawyer Laura Hart-McKinny. The court anxiously awaits the defence's next witness who could likely be Mark Fuhrman.
