Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant that exploded onto the UK drug scene almost overnight in the late 2000s. Originally synthesized in 1929 but largely forgotten for decades, the compound resurfaced around 2003 when underground chemists began sharing synthesis methods online. By 2009, it had become widely available through internet shops and “head shops,” often disguised as “plant food” or “bath salts” to avoid legal restrictions. Cheap, easy to manufacture—even in small underground labs—and technically legal at the time, mephedrone spread rapidly across the UK club and festival scene. Its effects, often described as a mix of cocaine and MDMA, filled a sudden gap when the purity and supply of those drugs dropped sharply in Europe. Within months, it became one of the most widely used recreational drugs in the country. The explosive rise of this basement-made stimulant triggered media panic and government action. In April 2010, the UK officially classified mephedrone as a Class B drug, ending its brief period as a legal high—but by then it had already reshaped the modern synthetic drug market.
