TAMING THE CRANE GANG Zachar is learning the Polos of Cangak Merengang.... New post to the ZACHAR PLAYS GAMELAN Website #zacharplaysgamelan #eviltwin #salingasah #interculturality #genderwayang Here's a short preview to a film I'm making in which I show the training process behind me making gender wayang films. This selection is from where I'm attempting it up to speed. The thing that makes this piece so difficult to play is the tempo you have to maintain to have the best possible effect; and it doesn't even sound like I'm playing all that quickly (it's just that in this first section the melody is not actually subdivided). Not only do you have to play it quickly but you've got to keep it up. When it sounds most astounding is when the rhythms are completely concurrent and the music suddenly jumps to climaxes; although there is not actually an "angsel" in so many words. Music drama is just communicated by sudden dynamic flourishes and sometimes a slight speed change which sound no less dramatic because they are subtle. I truly love this piece. If you want to hear/see what I mean, just notice what happens at about thirty seconds when it reaches a mini climax. It is a moment's dramatic release of tension in a piece that is unrelentingly joyful. If you can imagine moments like that for the full length of the piece that lasts between and five and six minutes if you play it, like, really quickly. It is genuinely so exquisitely beautiful it hurts. I wasn't expecting to have anything so quickly; parts are divided between the speakers so you can distinctly hear the spatial aspect of this remarkable music which sings through me into the world on these closely tuned gamelan instruments... ...It's just what you always wanted !_____________________ My name is Zachar Laskewicz and I am neurodivergent artist from Australia living in Belgium.
