ANNUAL OSUN FESTIVAL AT MODAKEKE, OSUN STATE INTERVIEW WITH YEYE OSUN OF MODAKEKE

ANNUAL OSUN FESTIVAL AT MODAKEKE, OSUN STATE Osun is one of many internationally recognized cultural festivals in Nigeria. Cultural festivals have their roots in the early history of the communities where they are celebrated. The Osun festival along Olojo, Ijesa Iwude, Ojude Oba, and the Eyo festivals among others are deep rooted in Yoruba culture and tradition. The cultural festival celebrations are done in observation of traditions of reflections as they reminisce certain historic events in the history of such communities. The Osun festival is about appeasing by showing gratitude and appreciation of the benevolence of the goddess of Osun. Osun festivals are celebrated differently across Yoruba cities located along the Osun river for similar reasons. However, celebration of the festival was initiated by different local events and experiences. Therefore, the festival the Osun festival is celebrated in different cities according to their own local experiences and interests. Each city has its own Osun governing board and a Yeye Osun who serves as the Osun priestess. The governing board organizes the spiritual programs in rites, worships and festivals of the Osun. The annual traditional worship at the Ọṣun Shrine near the Ọṣun River at Osogbo has become a popular pilgrimage and important tourist attraction, drawing people from all over Nigeria and abroad to the annual festival in August. Modakeke celebrates its Osun Festival this year on March 30th. All are invited, and all are welcome. See program schedule below. THE OSUN In the Yoruba mythology, Osun, the goddess of the Osun River is believed to be an enormously powerful queen and the only female of the sixteen major Yoruba deities (Orisa). Her full appellation is Osun Seegesi Olooya Iyun which means ‘Osun the owner of the flawless, perfectly carved beaded comb.’ According to Professor Siyan Oyeweso of the College of Humanities and Culture, Osun State University: in an attempt to give the etymology of the word ‘Osun,’ Joseph Murphy and Mei-Mei San explain that Osun must have been coined from ‘Orisun’ meaning ‘source’ and therefore, it may mean source of a river, a people, or children. - Among other things, Osun is regarded, among the Yoruba, as the goddess of wealth and beauty, an herbalist or healer, a diviner, a dyer, a giver of children, a goddess of fertility, protection and blessing, and a leader of women. During her lifetime, she was said to be the youngest and the favorite wife of the three wives of the much-celebrated Sango as the Yoruba god of thunder, the famous 17th century Alaafin of Old Oyo, who became Oba Koso. Osun is one of the most popular female deities in Yoruba culture. She was one of the Queens of King Ṣango. During her lifetime, she was noted for being kind, caring providing for the needs of the people. Queen Osun took her life after King Sango death in exile, by ‘becoming one with the river.” The river was named after her and deemed sacred by all people of Yorubaland. A movie by Florence Trautman, the Yeye Asa, the Yeye Osun of Modakeke captures the story of Queen Osun
