Sunday 21st April 2024 - Glorishears of Brummagem Morris Dancers were delighted to welcome Ansley Morris, Silhill Morris, Three Spires Morris, and Jockey Morris to a St. George's Day of Dance at Walsall Arboretum. About "Jockey Morris" Gwen Johnson, who was a member of the EFDSS, was the person responsible for the founding of Jockey. She was not impressed with the standard of Morris Dancing that she had seen and decided to create a young men’s side. This was in 1949. Gwen lived in Jockey Road, Sutton Coldfield and this was the inspiration for the club’s name. The rosettes that we wear on our kit are taken from the Sutton Rose motif and the Blue Baldricks are from the colour that is associated with the City of Birmingham where we are based. We practise all year round at Highgate Baptist Church on Conybere Street, Birmingham. Our practise evening is Friday between 8:00pm and 10:30pm. After exerting ourselves in an energetic way we then usually retire to the Craven Arms in Upper Gough Street to refresh our weary bodies. Jockey Morris have performed all over the country and have been proud to represent morris dancing, and the City of Birmingham, in places as far flung as Warwickshire, Devon, France, Flanders (many times), Cyprus, Holland and Germany. If you’ve ever thought that you might like to have a go at morris dancing why not get in touch with us.
