George explores more than 40 years worth of maps on the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World to see how the Magic Kingdom has changed and how Disney promoted the Vacation Kingdom of the World. With over 19 historic and vintage maps of the Magic Kingdom. http://www.imaginerding.com/ Follow me on Twitter: / imaginerding Follow Me on Facebook: / imaginerding This is from the cover of The Complete Edition About Walt Disney World, a magazine-style report released in 1969 and includes an illustration of one of the early models of the Magic Kingdom. You can see a lot of familiar landmarks in the drawing. It’s not really a map but it is one of the first images released with the park layout. Notice the monorail loop that would have taken you directly into the park just like Disneyland. There’s also an early concept for Space Mountain and a lot of water in Tomorrowland. Most of Fantasyland looks enclosed in show buildings. It’s fascinating how much it changed. This map is from the Preview Edition that was sold in the Preview Center. It was one of the first published views of what could be expected in October, 1971. The full map only shows the Magic Kingdom, the two hotels and a plethora of recreational activities. It’s pretty accurate, sort of. It’s more iconic and we will see Disney change how they present the Magic Kingdom overt the years. Heading around the Magic Kingdom, the Jungle Cruise and Enchanted Tiki Room are there, and so is a Country Bear. There’s no Haunted Mansion, but we do have the river boat and a Hall of Presidents style building. Fantasyland offers it’s a small world and a skyrocket station….without a return station. Interesting. 20,000 Leagues is the transition point between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Speaking dog Tomorroalnd, it’s a very colorful version opposed to the stark white version that was realized. There’s a rocket to the moon style attraction and the area feels closer to Disneyland. Follow the GAF Photo Trail for outstanding scenic pictures in the Magic Kingdom. The picture spots on the map have been carefully researched and selected as the best locations for taking memorable pictures. Each spot has been marked with a photo trail sign providing useful information for colorful and exciting movies and still pictures. Photo trail spots have also been located at the hotels and other scenic areas around walt disney world. Watch for the blue picture spot signs. This map is from the 1974 Your Guide to Walt Disney World, a small, fold-out one sheet. What is really unique about the map is how the show buildings, shops and eateries are presented. It is a fairly accurate scale drawing. You get a feel for how the building connects and how much space they actually encompass. There is also a very small arrow that shows you where the attraction entrance is. This map also shows the Pirates show building and how it is outside of the train tracks. There is also a spot for the Carousel of Progress and Space Mountain and it states Future Attraction.. check out the massive building in Fantasyland that has the Mickey Mouse Revue, Peter Pan’s Flight, the Columbia Harbor House and the Hall of Presidents. They’ve also added a few icons to represent the attractions. This reproduction was on the back of the guidemap that was handed out on the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World. It’s a closer mix between the Preview Edition map and the one from the 1971 Story of Walt Disney World map. Of course, it was fun to use the map to ride the opening day attractions. The 2012 map shares the beginnings of New Fantasyland. Dumbo has been moved and there is a teaser for the Casey Jr Splash and Soak Station. The 2013 map shares more details about the New Fantasyland, including Enchanted Tales with Belle, Under the Sea, Ariels Grotto, and Pete’s Silly Sideshow. Moving to 2014, we have the Seven Dwarfs mine Train and a fully realized New Fantasyland. The next major change in the maps would happen in 2015, with the addition of the the grassy areas to the central plaza. The Magic Kingdom would lose a water feature that existed for almost 50 years, but would add special seating for the nighttime spectaculars and for relaxing. But mainly to handle the thousands of people flooding the park every single day.
