Leopold Godowsky made a number of piano transcriptions of works by Isaac Albéniz, including “Triana” from the suite Iberia, and the “Tango” from España, Op. 165. Godowsky’s versions are known for their technical demands and for the way they enrich the original piano textures, often adding inner voices, countermelodies, and inventive passagework. They remain popular among pianists looking for virtuosic repertoire that showcases both technique and interpretive flair. Iberia is a suite for piano composed between 1905 and 1909 by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. It is composed of four books of three pieces each; a complete performance lasts about 90 minutes. It is Albéniz's best-known work and considered his masterpiece. It was highly praised by Claude Debussy and Olivier Messiaen, who said: "Iberia is the wonder for the piano; it is perhaps on the highest place among the more brilliant pieces for the king of instruments". Stylistically, this suite falls squarely in the school of Impressionism, especially in its musical evocations of Spain. Score of an excerpt from El Corpus Christi en Sevilla, which gives an idea of the complexity of the writing for piano. It is considered one of the most challenging works for the piano: "There is really nothing in Isaac Albeniz's Iberia that a good three-handed pianist could not master, given unlimited years of practice and permission to play at half tempo. But there are few pianists thus endowed." Tango in D, Op. 165, No. 2, is a composition by Isaac Albéniz. It was originally written for piano, as part of the suite España, Op. 165 (1890). A slow, romantic piece, it is played in the key of D major. Norman Lloyd says of the piece, "The most famous tango in concert music is Isaac Albeniz' little Tango in D." Carl Van Vechten has said, "The Tango in D is striking, and crosses some pretty stiles, despite its brevity." Since it has been transcribed for classical guitar by Miguel Llobet, it has become one of the most important works of the classical guitar repertoire. It has been played and recorded by guitarists such as Julian Bream and John Williams and many others.
