Mike at Sedona Paint gives us some basics about airless spray tips. Whatever product you are spraying, the manufacturer usually puts the recommended tip sizes in the product data literature. General information Tip Sizes Numbers below indicate tip orifice size in inches. Spray tip will be marked with 3 numbers. Example 517. The first number 5. Indicates half the fan width at 12 inches from the surface. So a 5 indicates a 10 inch fan width. The second 2 numbers indicate the orifice size so 17 indicates .017 of an inch. Personally I mostly use a 517 tip for spraying emulsion paints in the uk. With possibly a smaller tip for cutting in.
