Beirut explosion: Moment of deadly blast captured in second wedding photoshoot

A wedding photographer captured the dramatic moment an explosion erupted at the port in Beirut, Lebanon – the shockwave from the blast shattering windows in a nearby building as the newlywed couple is seen trying to take cover. Ibrahim Kitmitto, the photographer who filmed the chaotic scene, said a car rushed to the location immediately following the explosion and drove the couple to safety. “After the explosion damaged the hotel that was supposed to host the wedding, the couple called me to meet and finish taking photos of them,” he said in a phone conversation with a Reuters reporter. “No wedding celebration happened that day.” Kitmitto said neither the couple nor any of his staff were injured in the explosion, though the blast damaged his store and some of his equipment. This comes after a Lebanese bride and her husband last Wednesday revisited the Beirut square where the shockwave from a massive explosion interrupted her own bridal photoshoot. 29-year-old Israa Seblani was posing near the couple’s wedding venue when the explosion hit. The bouquet and the bottom of her dress were blown away in the aftermath of the powerful blast that shook buildings and filled the street with smoke. The explosion on Aug. 4, 2020 of more than 2,000 tons of ammonium nitrate killed at least 158 people and injured thousands more. There has subsequently been a week of anti-government protests in the days since the explosion, with people furious over perceived government “negligence” calling on leaders to resign.
