Today, I finally made it to Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen for a visit to the Great Buddha. Even though it was a quick trip, I was incredibly lucky to witness a sacred Buddhist chanting ceremony. Based on my quick research, these powerful assemblies of monks often chant protective Pali suttas, like the Ratana, Metta, or Mangala Sutta to bring peace, stability, and blessings to the community. Since it’s January, the timing felt like a perfect way to experience a spiritual renewal for the new year. After visiting the shrine, I wandered through the local neighborhood to catch a different perspective of the massive statue from the river. I eventually made my way to a cafe called At Talat Phlu, hoping to catch the sunset behind the Big Buddha from their rooftop. Unfortunately, the Bangkok air quality (PM 2.5) had other plans; the sky was hazy and thick clouds completely hid the sun. Despite the lack of a sunset, the view from the rooftop while having dinner was still spectacular. I wrapped up the night by exploring the famous street food stalls near the Talat Phlu BTS station, grabbing an avocado smoothie and a chocolate crepe for the road. It was a beautiful day of culture, views, and great food!
