Virtually everybody can recognise the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. Its steady triplet ostinato and haunting inflection are iconic, and have been for centuries. A much lesser-known German composer who was active only decades after Beethoven's death found it to be something special, too. Carl Bohm was a renowned composer in his own day, notable for his numerous art songs. Bohm wrote an additional violin voice that soars over the brooding, grounded piano, turning the work into a stunning duet. Both Bohm and his piece might have faded into obscurity, but his addition to the already majestic piece transform it into something otherworldly.
