I decided to re-create the pulsing guitar part using the 4-part choir in the background. In the forefront is the melody, and starting with verse two I've added some background vocals to match the original recording by Kansas. For the instrumental interlude I toyed with the idea of adding an actual instrument, but in the end decided to keep the whole thing a cappella and let the vocals do the cascading instrumental parts.
