Department of Education in Science and Mathematics National Council of Educational Research and Training Webinar Series: Listening to Learn (Session – 98) Earthquake: Risk, Safety and Preparedness Prof. Anil Kumar Gupta ICARS, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee Greater Noida Campus, GB Nagar Telecast on PMeVidya Channels #9, #10, #11, and #12 Friday, April 4, 2025; 10:00 – 11:00 AM (IST) This talk explores the science and engineering behind earthquakes, delving into both technical and practical aspects of seismic phenomena. We begin by defining earthquakes and discussing their causes, from tectonic plate movements to volcanic activity and even human-induced triggers. The session covers key terminologies, seismic measurement scales, and notable earthquake events in India and globally. It also attempts to understand the mechanism behind earthquake resistant structures. Additionally, the traditional Indian earthquake-resistant designs like Koti Banal, Kath Kuni, and Dhajji Dewari, alongside modern engineering solutions and AI-driven predictive analytics for early warning systems like what measures are being set in practice by NDMA and other government agencies are also being examined. The discussion aims to set the stage for understanding earthquake risks and fostering capacity building for enhanced disaster preparedness. Let’s embark on this interdisciplinary journey towards seismic resilience. About the Speaker: Professor Anil Kumar Gupta, disaster mitigation and crisis management professional, is presently with the Integrated Centre for Adaption to Climate Change, Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainability (ICARS), Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Greater Noida Campus, Gautam Buddha Nagar as Principal Investigator and Chief Executive Officer.
