Fauré lived at the crossroads of two important musical genres: the bombastic, nationalistic and grandiose late 19th century Romanticism of the likes of Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Wagner; and the harmonic and rhythmic innovation of early 20th century Impressionism from the likes of Ravel and Debussy. His education led him to be taught by Saint-Saëns with whom he had a lifelong friendship. After graduation, he lived modestly as choirmaster, organist and teacher and taught pupils including Ravel and Boulanger He began composing shortly after graduating in 1865 but his works didn't reach prominence until 1877. The Pavane was written in 1887, originally as a piece for piano but later Fauré transcribed it for full orchestra. Piano rolls still exist with Fauré playing his own composition - at a significantly more sprightly pace than more modern recordings. I have chosen to play this piece at close to the original tempo, turning what can sometimes be a rather depressing dirge into a wonderful light melancholy. I have arranged this for 8 violins - I hope you enjoy my arrangement and rendition.
