Vocal FX's performance of Purea Nei (composed by Hirini Melbourne) at the World Choir Games in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland in 2024. Purea Nei was written by the celebrated Hirini Melbourne to honour and remember a student of his who passed away after experiencing much adversity. It is based on a Ngā Puhi proverb; “Hokia ki o maunga kia purea e koe i nga hau o Tawhirimatea” / "Return to your ancestral mountains to be cleansed by the winds of Tawhirimatea”.’ Purea Nei’ speaks to being released of troubles, and the soul being cleansed and renewed.
