PLAB 2 is not a test of medical knowledge. It is a skills-based OSCE, and this misunderstanding is one of the main reasons capable doctors fail the exam. In this video, I explain what PLAB 2 examiners are actually assessing and why preparing for it like a knowledge exam often leads to lost marks. Many PLAB 2 candidates revise guidelines, diagnoses, and management algorithms extensively, yet still struggle on exam day. PLAB 2 is designed to assess performance, not recall. Examiners can only award marks for what they can see and hear during the station. In this video, we cover: Why PLAB 2 is fundamentally a skills-based assessment What OSCE examiners are looking for in candidates Common reasons otherwise safe doctors lose marks Why practising more stations without targeted feedback often doesn’t help Understanding this shift — from knowledge to performance — is a critical first step in effective PLAB 2 preparation. I have extensive experience in UK clinical practice and OSCE-style assessments, and have been involved in preparing doctors for PLAB 2 over the last few years. Future videos will continue to break down examiner expectations and skill-based preparation in more detail. #PLAB2 #PLAB2Preparation #PLABOSCE #IMGUK #UKMedicalExams #OSCESkills #PLAB2Exam
