Sweden Ends Most Covid Rules While Cases Rise

Sweden is welcoming an end to most of its Covid-19 restrictions and phasing out the majority of its current pandemic support measures. There will be no more limits on how many people may gather at events or in restaurants, vaccine certificates will no longer be required and reduced operating hours have been canceled for bars and eateries. Yet the streets of Sweden's capital of Stockholm were quiet and there wasn't any partying. For most of the coronavirus pandemic, Sweden stood out among European nations for its comparatively hands-off response. It never went into lockdown or closed businesses, largely relying instead on individual responsibility to control infections. While coronavirus deaths were high compared with other Nordic countries, they were lower than many other places in Europe that did implement lockdowns. "I don't see celebrating on the streets," said Markus Alexandersson who was drinking with friends on an outside terrace despite sub-zero temperatures. "Maybe in a few weeks or in a few months when spring arrives," he said. "Swedes, usually the sun indicates the celebrations, not necessarily the ending of restrictions." Announcing the reopening last week, Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said that "the pandemic is not over but has entered a totally new phase," and while infection rates have risen, it is not overly burdening hospitals. The support measures to companies will stay in place through February, Finance Minister Mikael Damberg told a news conference in Stockholm. Cushioned by low public debt levels and extensive welfare spending, the Swedish economy weathered the crisis as one of the most resilient among advanced nations, having already returned to its pre-pandemic growth path, according to the Finance Ministry. Support for events won’t be removed until June, Damberg said, adding it is important not to withdraw the aid too early.
