Eelgrass plays an outsized role in coastal ecosystems, storing carbon, stabilizing sediments, and providing habitat for countless species. But despite a major global push to restore lost eelgrass meadows, up to 60% of restoration projects fail. In this episode of Uncultured, Ivan Liachko, PhD, CEO of Phase Genomics, sits down with Todd Michael, PhD, professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, to discuss a new Nature Plants paper that sheds light on why some restoration efforts succeed while others don't. Todd's team, led by graduate student and first author Malia Moore, studied a naturally occurring hybrid eelgrass formed from Zostera marina and Zostera pacifica. Using long-read sequencing combined with Phase Genomics’ Proximo Hi-C scaffolding, they assembled both parental haplotypes as distinct, chromosome-scale genomes. This resolution was essential: it allowed them to trace gene expression back to each parent and discover that the hybrid inherited circadian clock genes from its deep-water parent, genes that enable photosynthesis under low-light stress. Tune in to hear how Hi-C made it possible to untangle parental traits and how genomics can move restoration biology beyond trial-and-error toward genome-informed decision making. Key Highlights: → Why a naturally occurring hybrid succeeded where traditional restoration failed → How Proximo Hi-C Plant kits enabled haplotype-resolved, chromosome-scale assembly of a complex hybrid genome → The surprising role of circadian clock regulation in low-light tolerance → What this means for the future of genome-informed coastal restoration 🔔 Subscribe the Uncultured podcast for more conversations at the frontiers of biotech and genomics. 👉 Read the Nature Plants paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s4147... 👉 Check out a recent feature on this research from the Salk Institute: https://www.salk.edu/news-release/gen... 👉 Learn more about Proximo Hi-C Plant kits: https://phasegenomics.com/products/pr...
