Hosted by the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, Chillicothe Ohio. Presenter: Randy Sanders of the Six River Valley Chapter of the ASO (Franklin County, Ohio), June 11, 2024. In this presentation, Sanders shares his unique and extensive knowledge of the fish and wildlife in and around the Ohio River Valley, particularly the segment from Gallipolis to Cincinnati, Ohio. Chillicothe Ohio has a rich archaeological heritage and Ross County is generally considered to be the center of the Hopewell Culture (1600-2000 years ago). Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, selected in 2023 for UNESCO World Heritage designation, include: Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, Ross County Ohio including: Mound City Group, Hopewell Mound Group, Seip Earthworks, High Bank Earthworks, Hopeton Earthworks. and elswhere in Ohio Newark Earthworks State Memorial including: Octagon Earthworks, Great Circle Earthworks. and Fort Ancient State Memorial. There are other notable Ohio Indian Mounds and Earthworks in Ohio which may be nominated in the future. In particular, the famous Serpent Mound in Adams County Ohio is on a separate list of tentative nominations and is expected to be the centerpiece of its own nomination in coming years.
