[00:00:22.02] We're building bridges that will last 60, 70, 75 years. [00:00:26.00] I was one of the old fogies that they had to convince [00:00:28.09] that we need to do something a little different. [00:00:31.00] And we thought, what a better opportunity [00:00:33.06] to highlight public art than on structures [00:00:36.04] coming into the city, and of course leaving the city. [00:00:39.00] Something to bring pride to Oklahoma. [00:00:42.09] I think really without the aesthetic piece, [00:00:46.01] it's hard for the community to be excited [00:00:48.06] about a roadway or a bridge project. [00:00:50.08] [Casey] So why not put a little bit [00:00:52.09] of the community into it, a little bit of ODOT into it, [00:00:55.09] and make it something that everybody's [00:00:57.02] very proud of out there. [00:00:59.00] (orchestral music) [00:01:01.06] First off we had to be respectful [00:01:03.04] of the public's desire not to waste money. [00:01:07.02] We have that same desire. [00:01:08.04] So we began, through looking at the scale of that, [00:01:11.03] our mayor, Cindy Rosenthal at the time, [00:01:13.09] was a big advocate of public art. [00:01:15.08] At that time, she had established relationship [00:01:17.07] with CDR, Creative Design Resolutions, Steven Weitzman. [00:01:20.08] When we got Steve involved, [00:01:22.09] he met with the local unit of governments, [00:01:25.03] and he was able to blend their desires [00:01:28.08] with what we could really afford. [00:01:30.06] [Casey] Part of the benefit of the aesthetics [00:01:33.00] that we utilize is they can be used on different projects. [00:01:37.02] These tack onto the side of the plywood. [00:01:39.00] You pour your concrete, you pull 'em off, [00:01:40.08] and there it is. [00:01:42.03] Pretty simple. [00:01:43.03] (orchestral music) [00:01:45.05] [Casey] The first project that we did [00:01:46.07] was an eye-opener for me, [00:01:47.08] because of the positive feedback we got from the public. [00:01:51.01] I had people say, "Well, what's next? [00:01:52.08] "I mean, I see the horses, the stallions [00:01:55.00] "running across the parapet wall." [00:01:56.08] [Mike] And began to put the old sage shield, [00:01:59.07] with buffaloes or scissor-tailed flycatchers. [00:02:02.09] [Gary] "Are you gonna do that here? [00:02:04.04] "Are you gonna do something unique for our community?" [00:02:07.06] [Mike] It really caught the imagination of the public, [00:02:10.08] and they actually wanted more. [00:02:13.04] It's now part of our culture.
