There is a version of A Silent Voice, with no dialogue and SFX, that almost nobody has seen. Hidden on a limited edition Japanese Blu-ray, this "Inner Silence" cut sounds broken to most, but composer Kensuke Ushio calls it the "raw, exposed core" of the film. But why would the composer believe that the version of the anime, devoid of any dialogue and sound effects, along with all the emotion carried by these essential storytelling tools, is the 'raw core' of the movie we know and love? In this video, we explore why the sound was designed to sound "intrusive," and why stripping away the safety net of dialogue might actually be the truest way to experience the world of A Silent Voice. If you enjoyed this and want more anime and film craft deep dives, feel free to like and subscribe. Hope to see you in the next one! Music Featured (composed by Kensuke Ushio): 1.
