Welcome back to episode II of Historical Jesus: Fact or Fake where we consider the first piece of early attestation and documentation from the hostile/non- Christian source, Tacitus. Cornelius Tacitus was a governor of the Roman province of Asia which is western Turkey. Practicing law and policy, Tacitus was also a prolific writer and historian bringing to us in part, the Annals and History. In his history, the governor recounts an incident, a fire that badly burned Rome during the reign of Nero and recollects the measures taken by Nero to quench the public outcry. Nero blamed Christians and sought them out for torture and execution, a people who were hated by the state anyway. We can deduce from Tacitus the following, 1. There was a Jewish leader called Christ 2. Christ was executed by the state 3. Governor Pontius Pilate endorsed the murder 4. The Christian faith was birthed in Judea but spread to Rome 5. The movement was significant enough for Rome to step in and "deal" with it. Stick around for our next episode discussing Pliny the Younger, a contemporary of Tacitus.
