Oxidative stress is a condition that has the ability to damage biomolecules such as protein, DNA and lipid. It causes an imbalance between the levels of oxidants and antioxidants in the cell. Oxidants accumulate in the cell either endogenously as oxidative by-products or exogenously by exposure to toxic pollutants. Long-term oxidative stress triggers the alteration of cellular structures and their functions, leading to diseases such as diabetes mellitus, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease and even cancer. The possibility of oxidative stress can be reduced by increasing endogenous and exogenous antioxidant levels and minimising exposure to various environmental pollutants.
