June 6, 1944: The Battle of the Hedgerows is an infantry war that can be compared in some of its aspects to a jungle war. The American advance is very slow and very costly in human lives. It sometimes takes several dozen Allied dead to take a meadow or a hedge. The morale of the American troops is affected in this war of attrition where a hedge taken with difficulty looks terribly like the previous hedge, to the point that the Normandy bocage is nicknamed Hedgerow Hell.
