Today's hymn is "Give Me Thy Heart", written by Eliza E. Hewitt with music by William J. Kirkpatrick. As I was typing the words from the hymnal, I was noticing the trinity aspect of the song, which reminded me of Christ coming out of the water after John baptized Him, and you see the representation of the Son, the Holy Spirit like a dove descending upon Him, and the Father saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Not that that is the focus of the song, but one of those things that I don't understand and yet I find undeniable that it is there - God calling Himself one like in Deuteronomy 6 and yet speaking to Himself in a more than one person sense like in Genesis 1 and as represented elsewhere. In that trinity is the possibility of a community as we are called as different persons or as in a body different parts, and yet parts of one body. God calls to us like in Revelation 3:20 "Behold, I stand at the door and knock". Our hearts are deceitful and desperately wicked, as it says in Jeremiah 17:9 and who can know it? Well, God can, God does know our hearts. Left to ourselves, we will follow whatever way we think is right - and how well does that turn out? But look instead to Jesus, who in Luke 5:31-32 said, "They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." He came to heal you. To know your heart, to love you, and to be loved in return. He loves you. Give Him your heart and find His healing. Lyrics: Verse 1 "Give Me thy heart," says the Father above, No gift so precious to Him as our love; Softly He whispers, wherever thou art, "Gratefully trust Me, and give Me thy heart." Refrain "Give Me thy heart, give Me thy heart," Hear the soft whisper, wherever thou art: From this dark world He would draw thee apart; Speaking so tenderly, "Give Me thy heart." Verse 2 "Give Me thy heart," says the Saviour of men, Calling in mercy again and again; "Turn now from sin, and from evil depart, Make full surrender and give Me thy heart." Verse 3 "Give Me thy heart," Says the Spirit divine, "All that thou hast, to My keeping resign; Grace more abounding is Mine to impart, Make full surrender and give Me thy heart." Words by: Eliza E.
