"The Big C: Conspiracies about Cancer Alcohol, Tobacco and Cancer Women in Science" The big C is for cancer, a disease that affects 1 in 3 people and is a leading cause of death globally. C is for the complexity of the disease. Cancer is clever – it hijacks normal physiologic processes to thrive. C is also for the conspiracy theories about cancer that abound– is it even a disease? (afraid so); is it caused by red lipsticks? (thankfully not!); can it miraculously be cured by a particular diet? (if only it were so simple!). And C is for creativity and collaborative thinking, which is what is required to tackle the disease. This TedX talk will focus on the big C and all the related Cs, and argue that we all have to be pushed out of our comfort zones if we wish to conquer cancer. Dr Kulsoom Ghias completed her PhD and post-doctoral training at Northwestern University’s Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at the Aga Khan University (AKU) Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. Her grant-funded research focuses on head and neck cancers and colorectal cancers. She co-chairs the undergraduate medical Curriculum Committee at AKU Medical College and teaches in the undergraduate and graduate programs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
