I absolutely love the 'electronic timbre' in the call of the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus); it reminded me of the Montezuma Oropendola's call. It's intriguing to imagine that these birds have been changing and honing their calls for millions of years, long before humanity's exploration of music. My dear friend Martina kindly agreed to perform this transcription on the Eb clarinet, affording greater technical flexibility, including fast leaps and flutter-tonguing in the high register, compared to a Bb clarinet.
