Since these vertebrae are most largely responsible for bearing the weight of the upper body (and permitting movement), they are logically also the largest segments of the vertebral column. These vertebrae are characterized by the absence of the foramen transversarium within the transverse process, and by the absence of facets on the sides of the body. Most commonly, there are five lumbar vertebrae found in adult humans, numbered L1 to L5 - but some individuals have only four, while others have six! The lumbar vertebrae are found inferior to the thoracic vertebrae.
