On October 29th’s episode of the Gather Project’s interview series, What’s Your Story?, Gather Project of Pioneer Valley interviewed Susannah Grant on her experience in the entertainment industry. She is most well-known for writing the Oscar-nominated film Erin Brockovich as well as co-creating the Emmy-nominated Netflix series Unbelievable. The interview was conducted by Baylar Ratzan (Amherst College ‘21) and Devyn Prieto (Amherst College ‘21). Grant spoke about deciding to write professionally partly because she recognized a distinct voice in her personal letters to friends when she was in her early 20s living in New York. She loved movies from childhood, and after trying out acting for a while, she decided to use her writing talent to participate in the filmmaking world. Eventually she took a chance on herself and applied to the American Film Institute, where she went on to be a fellow. As she’s developed her writing skills, she said she relies on her gut to choose projects on which to work, as the process becomes so long and involved. Her great instinct manifest itself in Unbelievable: the groundbreaking series is lauded for its mindful depictions of rape compared to the “trauma porn” precedent that’s been set by the industry. Grant also spoke about forsaking the traditional three-act narrative structure in favor of seven movements and writing from there. She said she writes best when she’s sleepy, as she finds dreams to be the narratives of the subconscious. Grant’s authenticity shined throughout the interview, teaching us about the importance of bringing our own authentic selves into every room and every project. It was a wonderful experience to hear her perspective on storytelling and film, and The Gather Film Project of Pioneer Valley is incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time with her.
