These are relatively new in terms of cosmetic surgery, only being used by us here at Aurora for roughly the last 6 months. The barbed suture is a perforated suture, which grips and locks into the flesh and tissue keeping it tighter as it is closed up during surgery. This is better for the surgeon, as they can ensure the neatest possible result. It also prevents the need for knots to hold the stitches together so there is a lower chance of infection and swelling as Mr. Richards explains in the video. This stitch is made by Ethicon.
