This is the fifth part of my singlehanded Round Britain trip in my 32ft Westerly Fulmar "Concerto" that was built in 1980. This part starts in Lerwick and tours round the Shetland Islands. It is not an entertainment video, but one that gives a feel of the sailing in these waters and the places I visited. Sailors frequently claim to have sailed Round Britain, but use the Caledonian Canal and this cuts hundreds of miles from the trip. Sailing round the top of Britain includes rounding Out Stack, the most northerly point of the UK. This was done in poor visibility and notice the latitude starts with a 6, whereas the majority of the UK starts with a 5. The other major part of this section of the trip was visiting sites relating to the Shetland Bus. During WWII a ferry service ran to Norway for spies and equipment, returning with refugees. The Shetland Bus started in the remote Lunna and later moved to Scalloway, both of these places were visited and included in the video. I also met the current owners of Lunna Quay and Lunna House, which was totally unplanned. The weather was either almost no wind with fog or quite rough - so be prepared for some boat motion in the video. Two minor breakages caused a few problems, but nothing expensive to repair. At the end of the video are some tips for sailing in the Shetland and Orkney Islands. These are comments that will prove useful for other sailors planning a similar trip. For more detailed information on this section of the trip can be read in the yachting forum posts made at the time. The trip has been completed and the next part will cover part of the Orkney Islands including Scapa Flow in detail.
