Developed by Stanford University as one of the world’s first robotic radiosurgery, Cyberknife® is now available in Beacon Hospital Malaysia. Cyberknife® is effective in treating tumours in the prostate, lung, liver, nasopharynx, spine and brain. It can be used for brain radiosurgery as well as the Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT). As a non-surgical form of cancer treatment, CyberKnife® radiosurgery is able to reach tumours previously considered inaccessible, untreatable or inoperable due to their location near critical organs such as the brainstem, nerve pathway, spine and spinal cord. As the radiation beams focus precisely on the tumour inside the body, the surrounding healthy tissues are left unharmed. Despite its name, CyberKnife® radiosurgery does not involve cutting into the body. This makes it a preferred option for patients who are not suitable candidates for conventional surgery, due to their age or health risks. Another advantage of the CyberKnife® system is that it has real-time tumour tracking and is able to monitor the patient’s and tumour’s position. Thus, it is able to adjust the radiotherapy delivery according to tumour movement, reducing the likelihood of missing the tumour or damaging other cells. For cases involving the brain or spine, CyberKnife’s® advanced computing software eliminates the need for screws inserted into the skull (head-frame) thus making it a painless form of cancer treatment. As CyberKnife® radiosurgery does not require anaesthesia or incisions, individuals who undergo the treatment are able to resume their normal lives almost immediately after the procedure. Beacon Hospital’s oncologists are trained in Cyberknife® radiosurgery in the USA and Europe. Our specialists are pioneers in this field in Malaysia, with extensive experience spanning over 10 years and having treated more than 1,400 cases. The results have been published and presented internationally, and they regularly give talks and lectures on the subject.
