On the 9th of March, 1946, an FA Cup match was played at Burnden Park in Bolton. Before the final whistle, 33 people were dead. And the game went on. Newspapers would later call it “The most horrible game ever played.” This documentary tells the story of the Burnden Park Disaster, one of the deadliest tragedies in British football history — and one that has largely faded from public memory. In the months following the Second World War, football had become a symbol of normality in a country still shaped by loss, rationing, and grief. When Bolton Wanderers faced Stoke City in a sixth-round FA Cup tie — featuring the legendary Stanley Matthews — tens of thousands flooded into a stadium unprepared for the crowd it would receive. As pressure built at the Railway End, barriers collapsed. Fans were crushed. Some were forced onto the pitch. The injured — and the dead — were laid behind the touchline, covered with coats and blankets. Officials faced a decision they believed could prevent panic. The match continued. Most of the 85,000 people inside Burnden Park never realised what was happening just yards away. This film explores: Why the crowd existed How the disaster unfolded Why football continued while fans were dying And how the warnings of Burnden Park were ignored for decades Burnden Park no longer exists. But what happened there still matters. CHAPTERS 00:00 — The Most Horrible Game Ever Played 00:46 — Background 03:16 — The Crush and the Decision 05:31 — Aftermath and Inquiry
