The Poetry Archive Now! WordView 2022 Entry Poet’s Biography I was born in 1959 and have been writing poetry all my life. I am the author of eight collections of poems, one of which was a Poetry Book Society Choice. I run the Read to Write poetry Project in Doncaster. Poem Description / Inspiration This is an autobiographical poem based on a real experience during the long hot summer of 1976 when I fell in love for the first time. It pinpoints the moment when I realised that I wanted to be a poet. Poem Text In the lull before the storm I took my lover by the arm to see the mermaid's hair that floated smooth and aqueous over the pebbles of the weir. We were no more than seventeen and soon, I knew, she'd have to go - but I was glad to have her there, slipping her hot feet from her shoes to let the long stands swirl and streak her ankles green on white. There were dragonflies that summer and they darted all about us as she untangled her numbed feet and rested them on the scorched stones to dry. There was the future in the moment and as the wet prints disappeared the first poems of my life.
