Most people who notice it at all assume it's just another star, perhaps slightly out of focus. But here's what will absolutely shatter your sense of scale. That tiny, insignificant-looking smudge contains over one trillion stars. Let me say that again because the human mind simply cannot process this number on first hearing. One trillion stars. If you tried to count them, spending just one second on each star, it would take you over thirty thousand years of continuous counting, never stopping to eat or sleep, to count them all. And that's assuming you could somehow perceive each individual star from the impossible distance that separates us. But we're just getting started on this journey into the incomprehensible. Because when we talk about how big Andromeda really is, we're not just talking about the number of stars. We're talking about distances so vast that light itself, traveling at the fastest speed possible in our universe, takes over two and a half million years to cross the space between us and our galactic neighbor.
