Doctors monitoring machines SUGGESTED LEAD-IN: Surgeons in India's capital New Delhi have adopted a new method of heart surgery that doesn't require them to personally enter the patient's chest cavity. It's all done by robotics and both doctors and patients say it is safer and far less traumatic than conventional heart surgery. VOICE-OVER: At first glance, it looks like a huge mechanical carnivore feeding on the human body. But a closer look reveals two robotic arms operating inside the body. Welcome to the world of robotics in medical applications. Minimally invasive robotically controlled cardiac surgery is the latest frontier in heart surgery. They claim it is safer, less traumatic and allows the patients to get back to normal life faster than in the case of traditional open heart surgery. In the da Vinci surgical system, two robotic arms with tiny attachments inserted through two small incisions in the chest, and a tiny camera inserted through a third, follow the surgeon's bidding. The 'arms' comprise rod-like structures through which rods with different instruments can be pushed through. The third 'arm' serves as the surgeon's 'eyes'. It holds the camera that provides three-dimensional images of the heart and its network, magnified ten times. Guided by these images, the surgeon is able to do precision work. SOUNDBITE (English) SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Naresh Trehan, Cardiac Surgeon Since there are only three small incisions made, it is less traumatic for the patient and they are able to recover faster. The procedure is used for coronary artery bypass as well as valve replacement and repair. John Edwards, a British citizen, had robotic surgery after being diagnosed with a 95 per cent blockage of the artery. He is up and about in less than a fortnight - compared to months of recuperation following open heart surgery.
