Yup, it's another video where we take some of our older classics and put narration to them, so if you want to watch this footage without the backstory, check out: • After The Long Winter: Durango and Silvert... . In February 2020, the Former Denver and Rio Grande Western steam locomotive, K-37 No. 493. Returned to life after a long journey through the winter of not being fired up since 1968. The 493 sat unused since the demise of the D&RGW's San Juan Extension, and had been trucked from Alamosa Colorado to Durango in 1981, but was still not used. The locomotive sat from 1981 in various places along the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, from outside the engine house, to inside a newly expanded roundhouse in 1990, to finally ending up on display for nearly 20 years in the harsh alpine environment of Silverton. In the late 2010s, the locomotive was brought down to Durango for an aborted attempt at restoration by the Colorado Railroad Museum. Instead, in 2018, the D&SNG began working on bringing the 493 back to service with the restoration pivoting to becoming the railroad's first oil-burning steam locomotive in the wake of the 416 Fire that began near the railroad that year. This video is from the 493's first trip hauling photographers for the railroad's annual "Winter Photographer's Special" on February 16, 2020. We'll hit Pinkerton Siding, Tacoma High Bridge and Siding, Ahh! Wilderness, Tefft and the world famous Horseshoe Curve... Of which this one is the most famous, there's no other ones that can compare.
