The Pillowman; Soundtrack by Vale V Wong - The Little Apple Men Theme

The Pillowman, a stageplay by Martin McDonagh is being staged in Kuala Lumpur by theatrethreesixty. I've the privilege of composing the soundtrack to it as well as starring in it. The last piece I wrote was The Little Apple Men (apart from the last minute change to the Train theme). I was struggling with music for this scene, due to the nature of storytelling. The story was told every single time at different speeds, and I knew I had to create a theme that would work regardless of how the slow/fast the story was told. I've always liked the timpani, but it would take an anime like Nodame Cantabile to make me fall completely in love with the instrument. This piece only utilizes the timpani, and the result, is magical to me. Every single note in the instrument carries with it so much colour and gravitas.
