Here I demonstrate how to make terbium nitrate, a very brightly green fluorescent salt! The procedure couldn't be simpler - just add terbium metal to nitric acid. I thought the process was interesting enough that it warranted its own video, and this will show the different steps that need to be taken for even very simple reactions like this. Hopefully this gives you an idea of the amount of work I do behind the scenes! After a week in the dessicator bag, my crystals weighed 2.1g. Assuming this is the hexahydrate, that is just slightly over the theoretical yield of 1.99g. The extra weight is either due to the inaccuracy of my scale, or the crystals not being 100% dry yet. Either way, not too bad! Terbium salts like this are used in some lighting displays as the green part of the RGB color palette. I have a very specific use for this particular salt in mind, in an experiment I've never read about anyone attempting before. I'm very excited to try it out and if it works, I'll post a video!
