Iraqi Army instructors have taken the lead on the latest Iraqi Forward Air Controller (IFAC) currency course with Australian and New Zealand trainers from Task Group Taji-7 observing and mentoring from the sidelines. The four trainers are the Iraqi Army’s first IFAC instructors, having been previously trained by Task Group Taji personnel. An IFAC, which is similar to a Joint Fires Observer in the Australian Army, is in charge of synchronising surface fires and aircraft to support friendly ground troops. The course revised navigation, close air support procedures and targeting, before culminating in a two day exercise at Taji Military Complex with Iraqi Army helicopters in support. Task Group Taji is a combined Australian-New Zealand training unit of around 400 personnel and is in Iraq to train elements of the Iraqi Security Forces to ensure they are well postured to secure and stabilise areas cleared of Daesh.
