Why Do We Often Feel Thirsty After Eating Out?

Have you ever experienced this situation? After dining out, you come home feeling extremely thirsty, and no matter how much water you drink, the thirst just won't go away. This phenomenon usually occurs after dining at high-end restaurants. The dishes there may not be particularly salty or heavy in flavor, so why do you still feel thirsty? It's not just because of the MSG or chicken essence added to the food. The real secret lies in the use of a special ingredient—ethyl maltol. Ethyl maltol is a flavor enhancer, also known as "pot aroma essence." It’s the secret behind why the dishes prepared by restaurant chefs taste so good! Just a sprinkle of ethyl maltol can enhance the umami of a dish by tenfold, increase tenderness by tenfold, and even impart a subtle smoky flavor reminiscent of wood-fired cooking, making you drool and believe that the delicious dish is the result of fresh ingredients. Whether it's frozen meat, pre-prepared dishes, or other ingredients, just a small amount of ethyl maltol can make the entire dish taste at least ten times more flavorful than usual. Ethyl maltol is not only used in dishes but can also be found in fruit products, so called “natural juices”, various beverages, alcoholic drinks, ice cream, dairy products, bread, pastries, soy sauce, condiments, as well as tobacco. Furthermore, excessive consumption of ethyl maltol can affect the bones of certain individuals, making them more fragile, leading to early joint degeneration, osteoporosis, brittle bones, and joints, and even cancer, presenting a certain carcinogenic risk. In addition, some sensitive individuals may experience side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headaches, dizziness, lethargy, and fatigue after consuming too much ethyl maltol. Therefore, if possible, try to cook at home. Even simple home-cooked meals are healthier than ordering takeout or dining out, and your body will thank you. Remember: good health is something we cultivate one bite at a time. In Singapore, ethyl maltol can be used in limited quantities under the GMP guidlines. (GMP) - “Good manufacturing practice” means that the additive may be added to food at a quantity limited to the lowest possible level necessary to accomplish its desired effect.
