The history of the Mickey Finn fly traces back to the late 19th century, when it was first tied by Quebec fly tier Charles Langevin. Originally known as The Langevin, the pattern later took on the name The Assassin. In this form, it gained popularity through the writings of outdoor author John Alden Knight, who helped bring wider attention to the fly. According to fly fishing lore, Knight once took fellow writer and Canadian angler Greg Clark on a fishing trip using the pattern. After experiencing its effectiveness firsthand, Clark reportedly remarked that the fly was “as dangerous as a Mickey Finn,” a reference to the infamous drugged drink. The nickname stuck. This exchange took place during the 1930s and 1940s, and from that point forward the pattern became widely known as the Mickey Finn. Its bold yellow-and-red coloration and proven fish-catching ability cemented its reputation, and it has remained one of the most recognizable and effective classic streamer patterns ever since.
