Verbal communication has never been by my strength. I’m an introvert and generally an awkward human being. So you might be surprised to learn that each year I give between 20-25 speeches at conferences around the world. Since taking the plunge into public speaking, I’ve spoken at nearly 100 conferences and events as well as being the opening keynote to 3,500 people. I still get scared and nervous before going on stage but I’ve picked up a few tricks that really help me to be relaxed when speaking in public and hook my audience. 0:34 Just Breathe! Spend a few minutes taking big breaths and slowly exhaling. These simple steps have really helped me to block out my own negative thoughts and overcome stage fright. 01:06 Practice How to Smile Not every essential skill is about how to speak in public, how to avoid nerves or how to give a great interview. Sometimes the most basic forms of body language are all you need. The easiest way to get people to like you or to fill awkward pauses is to learn how to smile. Practice day and night in front of a mirror and you’ll soon be amazed by how effective this technique can be. 01:23 Build Hype Use social media, content marketing, outreach and any other marketing platforms out there to build hype for your next speaking gig. 02:35 Start With A Question The room might be busy, there may be people talking or people running late.If you open your presentation with a question, then it instantly hooks your audience and engages them. This is incredibly useful for anyone wanting to know how to be great at public speaking. 02:59 Use A Supporting Quote What do you do when your audience has no idea who you are or if you’re to be trusted as an authority? Easy. Use a supporting quote by a respected public figure to help support your point. 03:24 State The Biggest Problem You want to tackle the biggest problem faced by your audience within the first five slides. This helps people to relate to you and your problem while making them hungry for a solution. This hooks your audience and sets them up for you deliver the crux of your argument. Canva is an incredible (and free) tool that I use to create my slides. However, if you’re not naturally creative then you can hire a designer. 04:57 Create Shareable Nuggets of Info Think about Tweetable quotes, things that people want to take pictures of or any other form of shareable nuggets that will get people talking about you and your presentation. Don’t be afraid to use humor or funny slides. They help to warm up your audience and can be incredibly effective at making your point. Additionally, people love to share funny pictures or jokes and if you include them in your presentation then there’s a good chance people will share them online. This social proof is a valuable asset to you and your business. This will help you to move further towards becoming a respected influencer in your industry. 05:50 Use Stories and Examples Using real life stories, examples, research and case studies helps to hook your audience because your idea or opinion becomes fact. 06:37 End With A Downloadable Offer People tend to remember the first and last things you say. When you end your keynote presentation or speech with something of value to download then your audience will be desperate to get their hands on it. I use this conversion rate of attendees to downloads as a way to gauge how effective I was at public speaking. You should too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sujan Patel is the co-founder of Web Profits, a growth marketing agency helping companies leverage the latest and greatest marketing strategy to fuel their businesses.
