In this teaching on 2 Kings 16, Pastor Tyler Warner and Calvary Chapel Trussville encounter the sobering story of King Ahaz, a ruler who represents one of the most dramatic spiritual collapses in Judah's history. Unlike many kings who received mixed reviews, Ahaz is presented as unreservedly wicked—a man who never met an idol he didn't like. His reign serves as a powerful warning about the dangers of being too easily influenced by the world around us. When faced with military threats from Syria and Israel, Ahaz made a fateful decision: instead of trusting God as Isaiah urged him to do, he emptied the temple treasuries to buy protection from the brutal Assyrian Empire. Even more telling, when Ahaz visited Damascus and saw a pagan altar, he was so impressed that he had it replicated in Jerusalem's temple, displacing the very altar God had commanded Solomon to build. This wasn't just political compromise—it was spiritual adultery. The passage challenges us to examine our own lives: Who is influencing our religion? Are we shaped by God's Word alone, or have we allowed cultural trends, popular philosophies, and worldly wisdom to dictate our faith? Like Ahaz, we can become so accustomed to the influences around us that we don't even recognize when we've replaced God's altar with something more appealing to our contemporary sensibilities. The call is clear: we must stand on Scripture alone, letting no crisis, no cultural pressure, and no appealing alternative draw us away from pure devotion to Christ. Who is Influencing Your Religion?
