Sunday School Lesson - January 11, 2026 - Repentance and Faith A Generous and Forgiving Parent | Luke 15:11–24 and Acts 2:38–39 Repentance is turning away from the sin and turning to God Faith is taking God at His Word knowing that He cannot lie. Shows repentance and faith as divine means of grace and reconciliation. This passage teaches that repentance begins when we recognize our condition, and restoration begins when we return to the Father. ‘For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate.(Luke 15:24) Acts 2:38–39 — Peter’s Call at Pentecost After the Holy Spirit is poured out, the people ask, “What shall we do?” Peter responds clearly: “Repent, and be baptized… and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Key truths: — Repentance precedes renewal–Faith activates God’s promises -God’s invitation is for everyone — now and future generations The Journey Away and Back The prodigal’s fall Coming to oneself The courage to return The Father’s Response Grace over judgment Restoration over punishment Celebration over shame Repentance and Faith Today Peter’s call in Acts 2 What repentance looks like in modern life Trusting God for forgiveness and renewal The Story in Simple Terms Luke 15: The Prodigal Son A younger son demands his inheritance early (basically wishing his dad was dead), takes the money, and blows it all on wild living. When he hits rock bottom—broke, hungry, feeding pigs, and wishing he could eat their food—he comes to his senses. He realizes even his father's servants have it better than this. So he plans a speech: "Father, I've sinned. I'm not worthy to be your son. Just make me a servant." He heads home expecting judgment. Instead, while he's still far off, his father sees him, runs to him, throws his arms around him, and throws a massive party. No lecture. No "I told you so." Just restoration, celebration, and love. Acts 2: Peter's Sermon After Pentecost, Peter preaches to the crowd: "You crucified Jesus. But God raised Him from the dead." The people are cut to the heart and ask, "What do we do?" Peter's answer: "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Bottom line? Repentance isn't just feeling bad—it's turning around and coming home. And when you do, God doesn't reject you—He runs to meet you. The Bottom Line Repentance and faith are two sides of the same coin. Repentance: Turning away from sin and turning toward God. Faith: Believing God will receive you when you do. You can't have one without the other. Repentance without faith says, "I'll turn from sin, but I don't believe God will accept me." That's just guilt and self-punishment. Faith without repentance says, "I believe in God, but I'm not changing my life." That's just cheap grace and fake religion. True salvation is BOTH: Turning from your sin AND trusting God to receive you.
