Dr. Abubaker Ali, a Foregut surgeon from Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit, discusses how the diseases of the foregut can be treated. Learn more about Dr. Abubaker, and book your appointment online at https://dmcmedicalgroup.com/providers... The foregut consists mainly of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, and liver. Difficulty swallowing may be due to prolonged reflux disease or a paraesophageal hernia (when the stomach herniates through the diaghram from the abdomen). With the reflux disease, the esophagus can get inflamed which turns into a peptic stricture leading to difficulty swallowing. Congenital problems can also lead to weakening of the esophageal hiatus leading to a hiatal hernia. In both of these conditions, patients are treated medically or offered a minimally-invasive hiatal repair using robotic surgery that will prevent acid from refluxing up into the esophagus.
