(7 Jan 2020) President Donald Trump defended the targeted killing last week of Iran's top general Qassem Soleimani, saying the United States "saved a lot of lives" with the strike. Trump said he had "tremendous information" about Soleimani's plans to attack U.S. interests that led him to make the decision to kill the general. Trump said he's heard from a number of other countries who are "extremely happy" with the administration's actions. Of Soleimani, Trump said he's been called a monster. "And he's no longer a monster, he's dead. And that's a good thing for a lot of countries." "He was planning a very big attack and a very bad attack for us and other people. And we stopped him," Trump said. Trump did not expand on what the U.S. intelligence was leading up to the strike but said members of Congress would be briefed on Wednesday. Trump also stepped back from threats to target Iranian cultural sites, telling reporters the U.S. has "to be very gentle with their cultural institutions." But he added, "I'm okay with it. It's OK with me."
