@J.JTimes Tensions are rising as Russian forces seize Ukrainian border villages in the north. With President Putin’s promised “buffer zone” now taking shape, the world watches to see if this move will shift the war’s balance. According to the BBC on May 27, Oleg Hryhorov, governor of Ukraine’s Sumy region, announced on Facebook that four villages — Nowenkie, Vasyuka, Veseliuka, and Zhuravka — have been captured by Russian forces. Russia claims to have seized six villages in total, with evacuations underway in over 200 settlements near the front. Just days earlier, President Putin publicly stated that Russia had decided to establish a security buffer zone along the border, protecting western Russian territories neighboring Sumy, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv regions. However, military experts believe that a major Russian push into Sumy is unlikely. Retired colonel and analyst Serhii Hrabskyi described Sumy as a “zone of distraction,” meant to divert Ukrainian forces from the primary battleground in the east — the Donbas. Local Ukrainian expert Konstantin Mashovets added that Russian forces have advanced only about 1 km in the past two weeks, indicating little real progress. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s central government has yet to officially confirm Russian incursions into Sumy, and the General Staff has only acknowledged “clashes in the Kursk direction” without specifying exact locations. The BBC noted that this shows Kyiv’s extreme sensitivity to reports of Russian advances in the north. President Zelensky also warned in a speech on the night of May 26 that Russia was preparing a “new offensive.” The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) assessed that the seized Ukrainian border villages could become bargaining chips in future peace talks, suggesting that Russia’s aim may be more diplomatic leverage than mere territorial gains. Russia’s new moves on the northern border raise critical questions. Will this strategy reshape the course of the war? Ukraine and the international community are watching with growing concern.
